Topamax Usage during Pregnancy Could Result in Birth DefectsThe epilepsy drug, Topamax has been found to be linked with birth injuries and severe defects. Pregnant women who use Topamax could face problems related to child birth.

The birth defects related to Topamax include facial and oral malformations, especially cleft palate and cleft lip. Cleft palate can occur in either the soft or hard palates of the mouth. Experts claim that these defects take place during the first trimester of pregnancy, if a woman uses Topamax.

Children with cleft lips or cleft palates face feeding difficulties. They require special bottle or feeding tube to receive proper nutrition.

About 244 previously revealed safety reports have warned the pregnant women against the use of Topamax as it can adversely affect the child. Majority of the defects are related to cleft lip/cleft palate but about 11% of the defects were also related to heart problems and a few were related to spinal defects.

Experts advise the pregnant women to consult a trusted medial professional before continuing the use of Topamax during pregnancy. In case the child faces Topamax related birth injuries, he/she must be taken to experienced and knowledgeable Topamax specialist.
