Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), Doctors Without Borders have accused the pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson of not doing much for the HIV/AIDS patients.
MSF is a nonprofit medical organization, which believes that Johnson & Johnson is not helping the patients of HIV/AIDS. The organization has claimed that J&J refused to participate in the Medicines Patent Pool, which has put the life of people at risk.
Medicines Patent Pool is a program created to reduce the prices of HIV medicines and increase the access of these medicines for the patients of developing countries. The program reduces the cost of medicines by licensing patents to other manufacturers and develops competitive environment for the manufacturing of generics.
The technique could help in manufacturing affordable versions of the drugs. This would be of great help in coping up with rising cost of medication. The MSF believes that such programs could not prove successful until pharmaceutical majors such as Johnson & Johnson do not support them.
Executive Director of MSF-USA, Sophie Delaunay said that “By putting its HIV drug patents in the pool, Johnson & Johnson has a unique opportunity to transform this situation and save lives worldwide. Instead, it has chosen to turn its back on these patients.”
