It was revealed in a research that Doctors tend to miss the details in the colonoscopy tests in the later stages of the day when compared to the beginning. This is because colonoscopy is a very intricate and minute test that calls for a lot of attention and discipline by the Doctor in order to be able to see the polyps. They can be faulty and even missed if the Doctor is undergoing stress and fatigue. This could mean a deal to the patient though.
Long working hours in the medical fraternity leave Doctors and nurses tired and weary. This might tend to have a negative effect on the care and treatment they provide to the patients. There is a perennial shortage of staff and this is the reason many of them need to do more than one shifts a day. This leads to mental and physical stress that can be harmful for the Doctor as well as the patient.
It was found that there was a reduction by 4% in the number of Polyps spotted by the endoscopists.
The results "may mean we should move toward shifts, rather than full day schedules”, said Dr. Prakash Gyawali of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, who led the work. He further added that "Smaller lesions are being overlooked because of the repetitiveness of the procedure that's making (doctors) less attentive toward the second half of the day”.
