Electronic giant Sony has plans to target stragglers who are yet to purchase tablet PCs to become equal to Cupertino-based iPad manufacturer Apple in the tablet market.
Apple, which is currently dominating the tablet market, was the first manufacturer to launch a tablet PC. Apple’s dominance in the tablet market is expected to continue through 2011, with an estimated market share of 70-80 per cent.
But, Kunimasa Suziki, chief of computer products at Sony, said they could pull alongside Apple in the Tablet market by attracting those who are yet to purchase tablets.
Sony recently introduced its two upcoming tablets, dubbed S1 and S2, which will be released sometime in the autumn. The S1 looks similar to Apple’s iPad, and runs Google’s Android OS and features a 9.4-inch touch-screen. It tapers down from thicker side.
The S2 tablet PC also runs Google’s Android operating system. It has two 5.5-inch screens that can be folded up. It will allow users to use it as a TV remote control and to enjoy Sony’s film and TV download service.
Both, the S1 and S2, will offer wireless connectivity through Wi-Fi or high-speed mobile phone services. Pricing for the upcoming tablets is yet to be revealed.
Sony said it aimed to become the top seller of Android tablets by next year.
