This is a wakeup call for size-zero people. As per a recent study by the team of Singapore Chinese Health, underweight people are under the danger zone of colon cancer.
The study reported that under the category of body-mass index (BMI) of 21.5 to 24.4, 89 out of 100,000 were diagnosed with colon cancer, while under BMIs of 18.5 to 21.4 and 24.5 to 27.4, number of infected people shoots to 103.
To the shock of everybody, the number of people under risk went up to 119 or 33 % more than the ideal group under the category of at the max BMI of 18.5, while under the category of at least BMI of 27.5, 130 out of 100,000 were reported with colon cancer.
The team of researchers, which included from the University of Minesota in the United States, claimed that the reason for such result can be attributed to "oxidative DNA stress," or mild inflammations that affects the immune system of the host and hence, allows cancerous cells to grow rapidly in the body.
Responding to the study, Koh Woon Puay, a researcher at the National University of Singapore and the principal investigator of the study, asserted that the team is trying to probe the underlying theory further.
