Janice, a 30-year–old stewardess, after fracturing her right wrist when she had a minor fall at work, discover her bone density was below range expected for her age, which is assumed to be triggered by Osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis, which is referred to as an old woman disease, according to Dr. Manju Chandran, Director of the Osteoporosis and Bone Metabolism Unit, and consultant at the Department of Endocrinology at Singapore General Hospital, can also be gotten by adults who are only in their 20s.
She further said that any fracture resulting from a minor fall could be a fragile fraction or osteoporosis if confirmed and Janice could experience severe consequences if her weak bones are not taken care of.
Bad habits such as smoking, eating disorders, lack of exercise and calcium can lead to quick bone loss in young adults as 20% of them in their 20s and 30s form osteoporosis cases.
Janice also stated she had extreme eating disorder after dieting rigorously and lost weight, this stopped her period for 2-years. just as in menopause ,being extremely underweight can impede oestrogen, which adds to loss in bone density, according to Dr, Stanley Liew a specialist in endocrinology.
He has stated that there is still hope for Janice, if she adopts a new and healthy diet rich in calcium and lifestyle, exercising too much could be bad and finally advises early building of bones by young adults.
