According to the study made by Prof Jack Cuzick, who is a well known Cancer Research UK epidemiologist at Queen Mary University of London, before the first signs of breast cancer starts developing, only 10 per cent of all women can benefit by taking drugs.
When high risk individuals suffering from heart diseases can be prescribed with statins to lower down the risk factors, then possibility of drugs preventing the development of breast cancer can also be a successful idea.
There are large numbers of women groups that are at a much higher risk of developing breast cancer. This disease can be because of a family history also and due to high density of breast tissues as well.
Therefore, in order to lower down the chances of such development in women, an analysis was conducted and those women with high risk were given tamoxifen. As a result, it was noticed that in comparison to those who took a placebo, around only one third of such women (who took tamoxifen) are likely to develop breast cancer in future.
Reason behind is that, when Tamoxifen interferes with the hormone oestrogen, by this one of the most common diseases, oestrogen receptor positive breast cancer gets triggered.
