New Study Recommends Surgery over Supplements for Prostate Cancer Patients

Prostate-CancerA recent Swedish study has recommended surgery as a better treatment option for the patients of early prostate cancer. They said that it’s better to undergo a surgery to remove the prostate gland rather than taking supplements. The researchers have also claimed that the patients who undergo surgery have a 12% lower risk of spreading the tumors beyond the gland.

The researchers said that patients whose tumor grows beyond the prostate gland are at a seven times higher risk of dying as compared to others. In such cases it is better to remove the gland.

Anna Bill-Axelson, Chief Physician at the Department of Surgical Sciences at Sweden's Uppsala University said that the risk of the disease is different for every individual. Not everyone can receive the benefits of surgery. The potential gains of the surgery are estimated on the basis of age, other illnesses, tumor type and patient preferences.

The findings were based on the examination of 347 randomly chosen patients for the procedure and 348 others who were closely watched by the experts. The average age of the participants was 65. After 15 years of the study, the researchers found that 48% of the men who underwent surgical procedures died as compared to 58% who were closely watched.
