Case of Drug-Resistant TB Revealed in US

The first ever case of drug-resistant tuberculosis has come to light in the US, of a 19 year old Peruvian who was visiting the country to study English. What started as a simple cough, ended up becoming one of the worst cases of TB that the doctors had lately seen.

With the case of Oswaldo Juarez, doctors have said that their worst fears have been confirmed, these were the signs of the much dreaded and expected strain for years - American's first ever case of a contagious, aggressive and highly drug-resistant form of TB.

The strain that was found in the student, being called (XXDR) TB for now, has never been seen in the country before, as has been confirmed by Dr. David Ashkin, one of US's leading experts on TB. The said form of the disease is extremely rare, and experts believe that only a handful of people have suffered from it around the world.

"He is really the future. This is the new class that people are not really talking too much about. These are the ones we really fear because I'm not sure how we treat them", said Dr. Ashkin.

"Drug resistance is starting to be a very big problem. In the past, people stopped worrying about TB and it came roaring back. We need to make sure that doesn't happen again. We are all connected by the air we breathe, and that is why this must be everyone's problem", said Dr. Thomas Frieden, Director of the U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
