Oil-Based Cosmetics Might Deform Contact Lenses

Oil-Based Cosmetics Might Deform Contact LensesRecently, a research was conducted by the Japanese researchers in collaboration with the leading eye care solutions company Ciba Vision following the complaints from women about their contact lens being cloudy or uncomfortable despite being relatively new.

The study involved several brands of soft silicone hydrogel (SiHy) contact lenses and being published in the 2010 issue of the Journal of Japan Contact Lens Society, the study found that oil-based cosmetics and cleansing agents cause deformation of some contact lenses which further leads to the blurred vision and discomfort.

The experts associated with this study suggest contact lens wearers to follow the instructions of eye care professionals on proper contact lens handling while applying or removing eye make-up.

One of the crucial findings of the study suggests that several manufacturers have started using oil-based ingredients to create new cosmetic products which eventually deform the contact lenses and experts believe that this is happening because of the increasing demand for long-lasting cosmetics.

The study’s principal investigator, Junko Tsukiyama of the Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine, Kinki University in Osaka, stated, “Oil-based cosmetics are easily adsorbed onto the surface of SiHy lenses not treated with plasma. Deformation occurred in all SiHy contact lenses except in those that had plasma-treated lens surfaces. Contact lenses with plasma treatment offer superior resistance to deformation”.
