A recent study conducted in Belgium has suggested that salt is a helpful remedy to fight a wide range of health issues including heart disease. The study also revealed that salt can reduce the risk of heart problems.
During the course of the study 3681 participants were observed carefully for around 7.9 years. Scientists found that systolic blood pressure fluctuated over time corresponding to sodium levels in the body. The diastolic pressure did not display any such variations. The lower sodium excretion was linked to higher cardiovascular mortality.
A referral from many other studies has evidenced that excessive intake of salt has a close relationship with high blood pressure and increased risk of cardiovascular disease. The most recent dietetic suggestions for New Zealanders has recommended to reduce the daily intake of salt to 4g per day, a significantly lower amount than the 9g suggested for consumption before.
Earlier, a survey conducted by the NZFSA has claimed that most of the people lack a clear vision to understand the difference between the sodium and salt. Only 36% of people surveyed acknowledged that salt contains sodium whereas another 32% treated salt and sodium as exactly the same.
