Asbestos has always puzzled researchers across the world. With recent tornado attack causing havoc in United States of America, health authorities in Alabama have sent alarming signals in the society about the potential severity of asbestos infection. As per reports, rescue workers so far have been taking swift action to clear out the mounting debris, including building material and ceiling, across the corners of the city which escalates the risk of asbestos exposure.
The health authorities fear that asbestos in any form, crushed or fine particle, exposed to any extent can pose serious damage to the health, causing asbestosis and malignant mesothelioma in people, irrespective of their age. The asbestos risk can even cross the safety mark in case the fibres percolate in human body waning out their immunity.
Moreover, health officials have denounced the protection level of dust masks and recommended half face type masks with double HEPA filters to avert the potential risk of asbestos.
Cautioning the support staff, Craig Tucker of the Jefferson County Department of Public Health, claimed, "The likelihood is probably pretty high. Asbestos is a pretty common material in older homes and businesses, so it's going to be there. I think the risk is pretty low though at this time".
