Youth Action Groups, Public Health, Police and the Nelson City Council have planned to invite parents for a meeting where they will discuss the drinking issue among teens and the strategies needed to deal with the problem. Teen drinking was a huge problem in Nelson and some steps are required to solve it.
The discussion will be funded by the Ministry of Justice to ensure steps to counter the menace. The meeting will take place on Wednesday, May 25, at the Nelson College for Girl’s Hall.
Nelson City Council Safe City Advisor, Ingrid Beach said that the objective of the meeting is to educate parents on how to prevent their children from alcoholism and to find more solutions for it. Ingrid Beach said that it’s important for parents to mix up with their kids, some parents are not even aware that who their kids’ friends are.
She lamented, "If we can help them to act collectively they can work together on strategies like setting guidelines around young people's use of alcohol and partying”.
Getting together through a meeting may be helpful for parents to strategize how to enable their kids kick the drinking habit.
Meanwhile, parents from all regions have been invited to attend the meeting.
