A recent study carried out by the researchers at the Gil Medical Center in Incheon has claimed that the multiple risk factors for long-term diseases are rising in South Korea. These risks are mainly for heart disease, stroke and diabetes.
Not only in Korea, metabolic syndrome is increasing among the people worldwide and is contributed by the changes in socio-environmental factors.
The study was led by Kwang Kon Koh of Gil Medical Center in Incheon, who said that the main reasons behind disturbed metabolism among Koreans are junk food, watching more TV, and performing less exercise or physical activity.
From the past decade, the problem of metabolic syndrome has also increased in South Korea due to both environment and lifestyle. Researchers believe that people with metabolic syndrome are at an increased risk of abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar, low levels of good cholesterol and high triglycerides.
Researchers believe that there is need to educate people about the importance of a healthy diet with low sodium, carbohydrates, and fat. The findings of the study will be helpful in developing a strategy to combat the metabolic syndrome and other related diseases.
