Nurses Demand More Pay and Infrastructure

Due to the fact that nurses, who are known to play major role in hospitals have their demands for more pay and basic infrastructural amenities falling on deaf ears, the number of nurses is said to depreciating severely in Karnataka.

During the International Nurses Day, these demands were made by the nurses and also through the submission of memorandums for the past 30-years, but were not obliged by the concerned authorities.

H H Dasegowda, a nurse at Victoria Hospital, was reported to have stated that the condition of nurses has remained stagnant since 1970 and the “Nurses Day” is now a joke as they only get praised with absolutely nothing being done to enhance their lives.

The issue has been reported to be having a detrimental effect on Karnataka, as there are 1,800 positions of nurses vacant now, 192 vacant teaching staff positions in nursing colleges along with 88 in the schools.

Moreover, some of the nurses complained that despite their job was very tasking, promotions gotten and all the years they have spent in the hospital, their pay and the facilities still remain the same.

Also, there are now 4,773 contract staff nurses in Government hospitals, who do not get benefits or gratuity and are being paid as low as Rs. 7,000 a month.
