Nursing is one of the noblest professions, and the passion and the dedication to care and heal others make this profession unique from others. Nurses are the pillars of health care system without whom the system will crumble.
The tribute should be paid to the nurses for all their compassion, politeness, novelty and care that saved and touched many lives. As National Nursing Week comes nearby, it’s time that we acknowledge the contribution of nurses in health care.
National Nursing Week was first celebrated as National Nurses Week in 1985 in Canada. In 1993, the name was modified from ‘nurses’ to ‘nursing’ to emphasize the profession’s accomplishments. The International Council of Nurses had earmarked 12th May, Florence Nightingale’s birthday as International Nurses day in 1971.
The Canadian Nurses Association on its website has stated that National Nursing Week aims to increase awareness among public, governments and policy-makers about the contributions of nurses towards health and care of people.
The Canadian Institutes of Health Research in a news release acknowledged contribution of nurses in enabling individuals, families and communities to realize good health and life. The CHIR also presented statistics from CAN that indicates 10% increase in number of nurses corresponds to five less deaths for every 1,000 patients discharged.
