UK Cultural Secretary Jeremy Hunt has announced that the Government aims to bring of Super-fast broadband service of 25Mb/s and above to 90 per cent of the country by 2015.
Speaking at an event for the Race Online 2012 campaign, Jeremy Hunt also reiterated the Government's target to have the whole country fully covered with broadband connection of at least 2Mbp/s by 2015.
Earlier, the Government had intention to cover the entire country with broadband of 2Mbp/s by 2012, but last year the deadline was pushed back by four years.
Hunt also said that they had set aside £530 million for local authorities to establish super-fast broadband networks in their areas. The first round of successful funding applicants will be announced on 27th of May.
Speaking on the Government’s broadband plans, Hunt added, “Now local authorities need to step up to the plate by bringing forward their own plans, setting out how they will deliver this level of ambition.”
The UK Government aims to have the best broadband network in Europe by 2015, with around two-thirds of the network to be made available by the market.
