The WHO and DoH has decided to take strong action against smoking and smokers. The WHO-DoH have recommended to raise taxes on cigarettes and other tobacco products as it will help in reducing the habit of smoking among people.
The authorities believe that another reason of the increase in number of smokers in the country is that, cigarettes sold in the Philippines are among the cheapest in the international market. The report of the WHO and DoH have encouraged the government to invest more funds towards the effort of making the country a smoke free place.
The report has claimed that the numbers of local government units are making great efforts to protect the people from the harmful effects of second hand smoke but the financial support is not enough to expand the program nationwide.
The report has also suggested the government to print the health warnings related to the harmful effects of smoking every cigarette pack sold in the country.
The report has also stressed upon the importance of increasing the access of counseling services and affordable medication to smokers who are trying to quit the habit.
