In the modern world, media plays vital roles in shaping the perspective of people. Media has undoubtedly helped in spreading awareness regarding dreadful virus HIV. But recently, it has been observed that HIV patients were being seen with scrutinizing gaze. They are being harassed in the hands of non-HIVs. Celestino Ramirez, a social development worker from the Positive Action Foundation Philippines Inc. (PAFPI), has urged media to stand up for the support of HIV patients and help in reducing discrimination being faced by HIV patients.
HIV cases have been on rise since the time it was discovered. In March, about 172 new HIV cases were reported. Dr. Eric Tayag, Assistant Secretary and Director of the National Epidemiology Center, has expressed concern that unless people become careful about their sexual practices, HIV-AIDS cases will surge 5-fold by 2015.
Moreover, the discrimination faced by the HIV patients has become a grave issue. Although media has played a magnificent role in pulling down the stigma and discrimination from HIV patients, more is required to be done in favor of them.
Ramirez reported that his group PAFPI is working towards helping HIV patients. About 40% members of the group are HIV patients and every day they help HIV patients to fight the battle of discrimination.
