Philippines Number One in Fighting Tobacco

Fighting TobaccoDr. Dorotheo, a Filipino doctor, has been presented with The Judy Wilkenfeld Award for International Tobacco Control Excellence in the US by the campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. Dr. Dorotheo is the first Asian to receive the award.

He is presently a Project Director for the Southeast Asia Tobacco Control Alliance's Southeast Asia Initiative on Tobacco Tax. The project is a five-year project, which aims at raising tobacco taxes and prices in Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, the Philippines, and Vietnam.

While receiving the award, Dr. Dorotheo lamented the aggressive push of international tobacco companies to expand operations in the Philippines and in Asia. He said, "We need to fight collectively to ensure that public health is prioritized over international trade". He is of the opinion that extending tax slab over tobacco can help the government to curb its usage in the country.

The Health Justice, a tobaccos control NGO in the Philippines, said that Philippines has among the lowest cigarette prices in the world. Consequently, it ranks among those with the highest smoking prevalence. The Department of Health has revealed that the number of Filipinos dying from tobacco-related diseases has jumped up to 87,600 annually.
