Breast Cancer: A Major Health Concern among American Women

A Major Health Concern among American WomenDespite the reduction in the number of breast cancer cases, it is still a major health concern among American women. Figures reveal that every year, more than 200,000 American women are diagnosed with breast cancer and about 40,000 die due to this disease.

After 2003, breast cancer cases have declined in the US due to the reduction in the usage of hormone in post-menopausal women because of the Women's Health Initiative results reported in 2002.

A number of factors are held responsible for the onset of breast cancer which mainly includes: advanced age, genetic factors and estrogen exposure. Risk of developing breast cancer increases between ages 40 and 50.

Experts believe that screening mammography for the detection of breast cancer helps in reducing the number of cases. Some experts also recommend a Clinical Breast Exam (CBE) for the detection of disease.

Early diagnosis of the disease results in early start of the treatment, which in turn increases the chances of survival. Women under the age of 50, who have dense breasts, are advised to undergo digital mammography. Experts also advise the women to discuss the option of screening with their health care provider.
