World No Tobacco Day on May 31 The Zamboanga del Sur Integrated Provincial Health Office has declared May 31, 2011 as World No Tobacco Day. This year’s theme of the campaign will be “The World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control”.

The campaign will also raise awareness about the harmful effects of smoking among the people of society to reduce its consumption. Cigarette contains 14 chemicals that can cause cancer and the smoke from a cigarette has 4,000 different chemicals that can damage human body.

Tobacco is linked with a number of serious health complications and can cause different diseases such as the heart, lung, cancer, diabetes and osteoporosis. Medical records reveal that nearly one million people die every year due to smoking.

This year’s theme, The World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, is a treaty created through the World Health Organization in 2005. The treaty has 170 member nations and they assist each other in preparing a solution for tobacco control.

Meanwhile, Australia is playing world-leading role in the war against tobacco. The country has started a number of campaigns and initiatives to eradicate tobacco use from the country. Every year, 15,000 people die in Australia due to tobacco-related diseases.
