Security firm Intego, which discovered the original Mac Defender malware, warned that a new malware emerged in the form of antivirus software Mac Guard.
Mac Defender shows an anti-virus scan taking place on the targeted Mac. It claims that the Mac is infected with serious malware and suggests the users to download and install antivirus software. Once installed, the fake antivirus software infects the computer.
Just like the previous version of the malware, Mac Guard offers false antivirus software and steals credit card information in case the targeted user buys the fake software.
Mac Guard works like Mac defender, but is far more dangerous as it does not require a password to install.
About the new security threat, Apple’s support page says, “This (Mac Defender) is a single security threat, and we can handle it. But, as Mac Guard demonstrates, the response seta a precedent that could be difficult to maintain.”
Intego suggests one should know that a web page that looks like a finder window and pretends to be scanning one’s Mac could be trickster. On seeing such as finder window one must leave the page and quit the web browser.
