Amazon launches rival to Apple’s Mac App Store

Amazon launches rival to Apple’s Mac App StoreThose who can’t or don’t want to make their apps available through Apple's Mac OS X Mac App Store, have now an alternative in the form of Amazon’s newly introduced Mac Download Store.

Mac Download Store, which includes more than 250 titles, has two sections- one dedicated to “Software” and another to “Video Games.”

Like Cupertino, California-based gadget maker’s Mac App Store, Amazon’s Mac Download Store also allows users to re-download apps in case they somehow lose the software.

Mac Downloads is not a standalone app. It is a page on the online retailer’s broader store. Moreover it has a few software titles that are not being offered by Apple, such as Microsoft Office for Mac and games like that of Dragon Age 2 and Civilization V.

But, Mac Download Store features no mechanism to keep apps up to date. It has left the task to developers.

Amazon launched the Mac Download Store with a $5-off promotion that will run through 1st of June.

Apple’s Mac App Store was announced along with Mac OS X in October last year. It reported more than one million downloads on its first day alone in early January. But, it requires apps to pass a number of unforgiving constraints to get aboard.
