Kiwifruit: A Great Source of Vitamin C

A Great Source of Vitamin CA study conducted by researchers at Otago University, Christchurch, has found that Kiwifruit is five times good source of vitamin C as compared to Vitamin C tablets. The findings of the study have been published in the American Journal for Clinical Nutrition, the highest-ranking journal for human nutrition research.

The lead researcher of the study, Associate Professor Margreet Vissers has said that human body depends upon vitamin tablets for Vitamin C, which doesn’t always fulfills the desired requirement.

For the study, researchers fed mice with kiwifruit and found that they absorbed vitamin C much more efficiently than those given the purified supplement form, and retained it for longer. According to Vissers the findings of the study suggests there is some agent in the fruits which helps in absorption and retention. The findings are said to be have important implications for human nutrition.

Vitamin supplements have always been under the scanner. After the successful study over mice, scientists are now focusing upon human trial. Human body is in capable of producing vitamin C by itself and therefore it is dependent upon sources like supplements. If the trail over human proves successful then it is believed that kiwi fruit will substitute the supplements.
