Acclaimed publisher Activision Blizzard is reportedly going to launch a monthly subscription service, dubbed “Call of Duty Elite” that will start with “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3”.
According to a report published by Wall Street Journal, Call of Duty Elite will offer a blend of free and subscription features. A monthly subscription fee will be charged for premium content that is not available on game discs sold in stores, such as downloadable map packs which provide gamers with new "Call of Duty" levels to play.
The upcoming service will also offer subscription-based online network that will allow gamers to meet friends of similar interests and analyze their performance metrics in the game.
Call of Duty multiplayer in its current form will remain free to play.
Activision is yet to decide on the monthly fee for Call of Duty Elite, but some experts believe that it will be lower than other online games. One can expect is around $5 per month.
The Call of Duty game series has earned huge acclaim around the world. The online version of Call of Duty Black Ops, which was released in November, is played by more than 7 million gamers each day.
