Joshua Kaufman, an Oakland interaction designer, got his stolen Apple MacBook computer back after police arrested the suspected laptop thief- 27-year-old cab driver Muthanna Aldebashi.
Mr. Kaufman’s MacBook computer was reportedly stolen from his North Oakland apartment in March. He informed police, but they could not help Kaufman in finding the stolen device.
Luckily, Kaufman had installed software called Hidden, which followed the computer's movements through a tracking device, and started sending back photos of the suspect captured by the computer’s built-in camera.
Kaufman posted the photos of the suspect on social-networking site Twitter and on a blog titled “This guy has my MacBook”. People who followed Kaufman re-twitted Kaufman’s message.
On the same day, police came calling Kaufman. Undercover police officers had the suspect’s taxi company send him for a pickup, and they took him under arrest when he arrived. The laptop was recovered from his home.
Kaufman’s case is the latest example to show how technology can help people get their stolen thing back.
