Three men await test results after being bitten by a flying fox in central Queensland. The mammal before being tested for lyssavirus died. Its corpse however tested positive for the virus.
According to Queensland Health's acting chief health officer Christine Selvey the trio when bitten was holidaying near the town of 1770. Reports say that the men have headed to their homes at Ipswich, Hervey Bay and Agnes Water.
Selvey added that for the men to be treated with post-exposure prophylaxis drugs; arrangements were on.
Reports state that the men were bitten on their heads. There is however no disease associated with bat biting but the virus has proved fatal in a very few cases which concerns authorities.
"There is no disease after a bat bites but the prevention actually prevents the virus from replicating and traveling to their brain and therefore they don't get any symptoms at all," Selvey said.
Lyssavirus was identified in 1996 and since killed two people.
