The Associate Health Minister, Tariana Turia, has confirmed a $7.3 million funding for sexual and reproductive health initiatives while claimed that it is dragged from the previous health program. Further, she ensured that the new approach will impart better results and also revealed that the grant would be used for the evaluation of school based sexual education to analyze the needs of young people.
In addition to this, a good portion of the allocated money would be used for condom promotion initiatives and expending health promotion events to reduce the shame experienced by the HIV or aids sufferers. Completion of chlamydia project and support for African community’s research project are other missions that are believed to grab help from the aid.
"New Zealand has high rates of sexually transmitted infections... the incidence of chlamydia in Maori youth is double that of non-Maori youth”, added Tariana Turia. “We need to step up our efforts in order to improve sexual health outcomes by increasing the support and information available”.
The minister also stressed upon the need of more efforts to improve the sexual health. The financial support is believed to focus on young Maori and Pasifika people.
