PM Gordon Brown Pegs Cancer Survivors as "Priority"

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has informed the Parliament that, according to him, proper care for survivors of cancer is a top priority, inspite of concerns from a leading charity that patients who are recovering from the disease, more often than not, do not receive proper after care and go on to develop dangerous and chronic illnesses, and that they are being neglected.

A report by the Macmillan Cancer Support had stressed that patients who survive cancer are not being looked after properly, which leads to them developing problems which have cancer treatment as the root cause.

The Prime Minister has, however, differed and stressed that many lives are being saved through improvements in cancer treatment, although survivors often do require long-term support.

"The Macmillan work is something that is very special in our country and something that is very much appreciated. I believe that the advances we are making in cancer care, particularly if people are detected early and particularly if people are able to go through the screening process, means that lots of lives that would otherwise be lost are being saved", said Mr. Brown.

As per the charity's beliefs, nearly 250,000 patients who live for at least 5 years after being diagnosed with cancer go on to suffer from major health issues like memory loss or cardiovascular diseases.
