Scientists Genetically Modifies Cows to Produce Human Breast Milk

Scientists Genetically Modifies Cows to Produce Human Breast MilkChinese scientists from China's Agricultural University in Beijing have genetically modified cows to produce milk, which is similar to human breast milk. The technology used in producing the milk was identical to that used to produce Dolly the sheep, which was the first mammal to be cloned by scientists, in Scotland.

The milk was produced by breeding a transgenic herd of 300 cattle by inserting human genes into cloned cow embryos. These embryos were later implanted into surrogate cows.

Scientists at China's Agricultural University in Beijing said that the genetically produced milk has same immune-boosting and antibacterial qualities as breast’s milk. The milk is undergoing safety tests but requires government’s approval to be sold in supermarkets.

Scientists said that the milk is sweeter, stronger and nutritious than breast milk. The Director of the Research Project, Professor Li Ning, said that the 1.5 billion people in the world do not get enough food to eat and survive so it’s their duty to develop science and technology to help such poor people.

The scientists have also produced animals that are resistant to mad cow disease and beef cattle that are genetically modified to produce more nutritious meat.
