Researcher will come together to record the genes related to Alzheimer’s disease. This disease is another form of dementia which relates to the behavioral and mental problems. It is diagnosed in people above 65 years of age. More than 5.3 million people in the United States and 35.6 million people across the globe are suffering from this disease. Till now, scientists are of the belief that around 50 genes are involved in the Alzheimer’s disease
Dr. Jonathan Haines of Vanderbilt University said, "What it allows us to do is to get to the endpoint of understanding what genes are involved and start the process of understanding why these genes are involved".
Dr. Haines is part of researchers’ team known as the International Genomics of Alzheimer's Project (IGAP). This team is working on 20,000 Alzheimer’s patients by comparing them with the same number of aged healthy persons. During the study, they will plot the genes involved in development of this disease. Once they find some progress in the study, 10,000 more people will be added for scrutiny.
“We should be able to identify ways of slowing or stopping or even potentially preventing the disease from occurring”, Dr. Haines said.
