Nine-Month-Old Baby Received Live Liver Transplant in Auckland City HospitalA nine-month-old twin baby, Louie, has received his live liver transplant in Auckland City Hospital on Wednesday. The doctors at the hospital have stated that there were some minor complications in the transplant which has left his family worried.

The liver was donated to Louie by a Nelson man, Deon Charles. Louie required the transplant as he was suffering from a rare genetic disorder, propionic academia which stops the body from breaking down certain amino acids, and can ultimately damage to internal organs. Mrs. Charles was in the intensive care unit of the hospital after the operation but now he has been shifted to the ward. The transplant operation took eight hours each.

It was the first live liver transplant to be performed on someone with propionic academia in Australia. Mrs. Charles wrote on a Facebook page yesterday that she was feeling much better after the transplant.

Louie's uncle, Ryan Charles, said that Louie was not completely well this morning. He has temperature and was having chest problems and the oxygen tube which was removed yesterday was being put back in to help him breathe.
