Sprouts Still Risk the Infection of E.coli

Sprouts Still Risk the Infection of E.coliThe FDA is still advising people to avoid the consumption of sprouts since there is still a risk of E. coli that cannot always be identified.

Those most at risk: children, pregnant women and elderly people are advised not to even sprouts in case of E. coli infection.

The FDA is stating that it is impossible for every seed to be tested; however growers can test the water that comes off the vegetables during the first 48 hours to determine whether the crop is contaminated.

The FDA is in an odd position as they advice the public to avoid eating vegetables packed filled with nutrients. It’s hard enough to get people to eat a well balanced meal of fruits and vegetables, and now the FDA is forced to put a warning out on sprouts.

Senior Farm Policy Analyst for the Pro-Organic Cornucopia Institute, Mark Kastel, is suggesting to consumers that they may be better off choosing organic sprouts over non-organic because the majority of the outbreak came from conventional farms.

However, the FDA reported that there is no data that shows there is a higher or lower risk of E. coli in organic sprouts.
