Dengue Fever Vaccine Shows Promising Results in Thailand

Dengue Fever Vaccine Shows Promising Results in ThailandOn Friday, a Mahidol University researcher involved in the tests has revealed that the world’s first trial of a dengue fever vaccine has shown promising results in Thailand. The vaccine is developed by Sanofi Pasteu and was involved in on laboratory animals and humans in the Philippines, Mexico, Vietnam, Peru and the United States.

The study was started in 2009 by a team from Mahidol University, Ratchaburi Hospital and the Public Health Ministry's Disease Control Department. Between February 2009 and March this year, about 4,000 children were vaccinated every six months. The team of scientists involved in the trails closely monitored the kids for 28 days and did not find any side effects of the vaccination. As a result of the vaccination, an improvement in the condition of kids was reported.

Lead Investigator of the trails, Professor Arunee Sabchareon, said that with the help of vaccination, the number of cases of dengue infection could be reduced in Thailand as about 70,000 people are affected by dengue fever each year in Thailand.

Dengue fever is a major infectious disease in tropical countries and it affects about 220 million people every year.
