Apple recalls some Verizon iPads over duplicate MEID numbers

Apple recallsA small number of the Apple iPad 2 tablets are being recalled by the Cupertino, Calif.-based gadget maker due to an issue with the devices' Mobile Equipment Identifier (MEID) numbers, according to 9to5Mac.

All of the affected iPad 2 tablets, which were inadvertently shipped with identical electronic serial numbers, belong to Verizon Wireless. Duplicate MEID numbers ont eh devices would not have let users to connect to Verizon Wireless's CDMA 3G network.

Conforming the report, an Apple representative said, “Duplicate MEID numbers were flashed onto an extremely small number of iPad 2 units for the Verizon 3G-network.”

The units which have already been sold to end users will be replaced by Verizon free of charge. The recall could further restrain the supplies of the world’s most popular tablet.

During its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco, Apple claimed that it had already sold 25 million iPads since the original tablet was launched previous year. According to some analysts, Apple could sell another 8 million iPads before the end of current quarter.
