Media questions the existing health system, the anti-vaccination tradition, which had resulted in putting more number of lives of children at risk, through their release, “No Forced Vaccines”. The release overshadowed the threat from measles by claiming it as a harmless and a common form of child sickness.
Generally measles has been considered as not being a harmful disease because of its negligible effect on health of children, only 30% was believed to have a severe reaction like diarrhea, ear infection and pneumonia. Most families were happy to take 1 in 1,000 children at stake to die with being infected with measles. As recently as 1991, a measles epidemic of 7000 cases claimed 7 lives in New Zealand. Keeping the ones contracted with measles away from schools and public places was a way to avoid spread of the disease.
Symptoms of measles include fever, cough, runny nose and sore eyes followed by a red blotchy rash about three days later. The rash usually starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body
Another report was about the outbreak of measles in the northern suburbs primary school. Four children were diagnosed to have measles. Around 12 children were found not being vaccinated against measles therefore the health departments suggested their parents to keep those children at home for some days.
