A research group of South Africa had performed an experiment on a gel which was expected to be useful in reducing the chances among women getting contracted with HIV. The group was going to conduct a trial that would authenticate the effectiveness of the gel.
As per Professor Helen Rees, the Executive Director of Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute, this research was the first group research on HIV conducted at seven centres. The research was among the three remarkable achievements in prevention of HIV. A Tenofovir vaginal gel proved 39% effective at protecting young women from HIV and halved the risk of Herpes HSV-2, according to the Caprisa 004 study in KwaZulu-Natal.
As per facts, the most effective method of prevention from the virus has been use of condoms, mother to child transmission have been successfully prevented even counseling and testing had helped a lot. South Africa had made remarkable achievement in by reducing the rate of contraction among infants from 8% to 3.5% with the help of their PMTCT programme, by making 14,000 men undergo male circumcision, increase in access to condoms, and encouraging 12 million residents of South Africa to take HIV tests .
As per a recent study, it shown that HIV-negative women and men can be protected from the virus by antiretroviral drugs through pre-exposure prophylaxis (Prep) plan to be implemented by 2012.
