Elderly people are not unsafe at their own places, claims a report by Age Concern. This organization works for the welfare of aged group and its report revealed the cruelty of family members. According to the Age Concern group, 70-80% of assault cases are done by the family members. The report stated that the organization receives approximately four calls of family assault cases each day.
Jayne McKendry, Age Concern New Zealand Spokesperson, said that sometimes these elderly people do not report such cases to the authorities, as it might bring disgrace to their family. He told that according to the statistics, more than half of the cases report financial neglect and nearly two-third of the total number of cases report psychological abuse. Cases of sexual assault and physical assault are also reported many a times. These elderly people are sometimes deserted by the family. Elderly females are the major victims of these abuses.
Kerry Howley, Age Concern stated that she has many distressing stories to tell. "People die, they die of broken hearts. Because most of the abuse is done by family members, by the very people who are supposed to love and care for them", she said. The society should be changed and should be made a healthier place to grow older.
