In the wake of a dearth in number of blood donors, Fiji National Blood Services has sent alarming signals in the society by claiming that a spurt in number of HIV/AIDS cases cannot be denied.
There are confirmed reports that the National Blood Service had organized a huge blood drive in the Western Division for a large number of people, though number of participants was less.
Citing concern over the fact that a large number of people were still unaware about the symptoms of the disease and furthermore, about the subsequent steps to be taken post-diagnosis of HIV infection, Fiji National Blood Services Director Josefa Bolaqace assured that its Blood Service team takes swift action as soon as any case of HIV comes under their notice.
After a large number of people were screened and tested for the disease, number of HIV cases was still found to be a lot lesser than expected, reinforcing lack of awareness among the people.
Deciphering the crippling condition of HIV awareness, Mr. Bolaqace has called for people to come forward to get themselves checked for HIV/AIDS.
Furthermore, Mr. Bolaqace added, "It is sad when people find out this way that they are HIV positive. The Blood Service apart from its work is also spreading awareness on HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections”.
