The Singapore Medical Council (SMC) has formed a second disciplinary committee against a private surgical practitioner, Dr. Susan Lim.
Dr. Lim is accused of overcharging the younger sister of the Queen of Brunei, Pengiran Anak Hajah Damit for seven months of cancer treatment and other services. Dr. Lim treated Damit from 2001 and raised a bill of $24.8 million, who later died in August, 2007.
In another case, Dr. Lim was accused of increasing a bill of $400 to $211, 000 which is about 500 times higher than the original amount.
The SMC has said that the overbilling by D. Lim and other doctors of Singapore may affect the plans of the government to attract more foreign patients. The SMC has revealed that heart-bypass surgery in Singapore costs about a sixth of that charged in the US. Pawel Suwinski, a Health Care Analyst at Frost & Sullivan said that India, Malaysia, Thailand and South Korea are among countries, which are competing with Singapore health care services.
Dr. Lim has denied all the allegations but refused to make any other comments. She only said that Hajah Damit had agreed pay the bill raised by her.
