A recent survey has revealed that millions of baby boomers across the country still like to get high every now and then. Nearly 5% of the Americans over the age of 50 have admitted to abusing drugs, as per a new Government study.
While marijuana is the "drug of choice", many boomers cannot seem to stop themselves from abusing prescription medicines as well, an act which is forcing more and more of them to get into rehab centers.
"This new data has profound implications for the health and well being of older adults who continue to abuse substances", said Pamela Hyde, head of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the federal agency that carried out the research.
According to the study, the problem seems to be that many of baby boomers never ceased taking drugs when they stepped into adulthood, and pill popping always seemed like the easier habit for the "Woodstock" generation to get addicted to.
"We need much better support services for the number of older adults who are going to have substance abuse problems", said Dr. Gary Kennedy, director of Geriatric Psychiatry at Montefiore Medical Center.
