Elder Abuse Cases Rising in New Zealand

Elder AbuseIt has been reported that the cases of elder abuse are constantly rising in New Zealand. The most common cases are of psychological and financial abuse.

A rest home and hospital, Aroha Lifecare, has said that about 70-80% of the cases of elder abuse and neglect in New Zealand occur on the part of family members. The staff of the rest home has urged the people to show some respect to older people of the society and stop abusing them. To raise awareness about the need of elderly care in the society the charity will be celebrating World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15.

Meanwhile, a charity for older people, Age Concern, will be holding a free public seminar tomorrow on elder abuse awareness. Age Concern Marlborough Community Support Worker, Helen North said that Age Concern would like to encourage older people in the community to participate in various events organized for them. The charity has advised older people to be confident regarding their own choices and decision-making.

Age Concern elder abuse and neglect prevention services receive an average of four calls a day related to the abuse of older people.
