The ongoing unrest among the people of South Dunedin regarding the job cuts has damaged the negotiations between Hillside union delegates and their KiwiRail bosses. The unrest among the KiwiRail representatives and Hillside workers has been growing since the state railway carrier announced to cut about 70 jobs from its nationwide engineering and design operations.
A meeting which was held to discuss the security of jobs at Hillside Workshops broke down as the unrest workers began to thump the table. It has been revealed that the meeting was held to reduce the job cuts by 40. As there is scarcity of workers, therefore it was thought that 40 jobs should be cut instead of 70 jobs.
It has been told that a public meeting is necessary to solve the issue of cuts in the job if the meeting is delayed for long then it might become harder on the both sides. Therefore, a public meeting on the matter will be held in Dunedin on Wednesday night.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that A Chinese Company has been contracted by the state-owned enterprise to build 300 wagons for $29 million. KiwiRail has indicated that it will be needing 4,000 new wagons in the next few years.
