UK census data is safe: says ONS

says ONSThe UK census data compiled in March this year is safe & secure, and data hack claim was just a hoax, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has confirmed.

The confirmation came in response to an unidentified message which earlier this week claimed that the hacker group LulzSec infiltrated the ONS’ computer network and stole census data. However, LulzSec later claimed that neither it did launch cyber attack on ONS not it posted any message regarding the attack.

Census Director Glen Watson said that the census data hack claim looked like a hoax and their investigation concluded that the hack claim was without any foundation.

The statement issued by the ONS stated, "I can reassure the public that their census records are secure. We have strict measures in place protecting the nation's census information.”

Earlier, hacker group LulzSec claimed responsibility for breaching the computer network security of several big companies and agencies, including Sony’s PlayStation Network, CIA, PBS, the US Senate, and an affiliate of the FBI.

Meanwhile British teenager Ryan Cleary, who was arrested for his alleged involvement with LulzSec, appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ court in London and was remanded to London police for three days so that he could be questioned over alleged cyber crimes.
