At St. Michaels Hospital in Toronto, researchers were trying to find ways to reverse Type 1 diabetes in mice. The question as to whether the results of the study could be applied to humans is still fuzzy.
It’s not the first time that Type 1 diabetes has been reversed in mice. They are hoping trying to destroy the immune system because of diabetes, and stop the destruction of those cells.
Within the study, the scientist demonstrated therapeutic effects of GABA to prevent Type 1 diabetes. People with Type 1 diabetes are at a high risk of kidney damage. They can also suffer from problems leading to blindness and nerve damage. They also have difficulty controlling their blood sugars and are at a higher risk of death.
Michael Cloutier, President and CEO of the Canadian Diabetes Association and one of the people funding the study, is staying optimistic.
“Diabetes research such as this brings us closer to a cure. We are excited to be a part of this significant discovery and look forward to the outcomes of clinical studies”.
