Study Reveals Earlier Onset of Puberty in Current Generations

A new research has revealed that teenagers are starting to hit puberty earlier during the current times as compared to the previous generations.

For the sake of study, researchers from the University of Queensland analyzed children from across Brisbane born between 1981 and 1983, and Professor Jake Najman, lead researcher, has shared that healthier children tend to start puberty earlier.

"One of the things that predicts the age at which females and males go through puberty is their body weight. People who are better fed and who ... [are] better off physically go through puberty earlier. It's our body responding to the fact we're better off - so we can reproduce at an earlier age", the Professor said.

According to study authors, the fact that most of the children are now hitting puberty much earlier than ever before could be a significant cue in understanding why girls are increasingly becoming more involved in anti-social behavior like drinking, smoking and bullying, among others.

Also, the study says that girls who start puberty before the age of 12 can get just as aggressive as boys.

Details of the study have been published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Criminology.
