Spread of Measles in Auckland

Spread of Measles in Auckland With the spread of measles increased in Auckland, around 50 people were confirmed to contract the disease. Dr. Richard Hoskins, Auckland Regional Public Health Service Medical Officer of Health, said that around 400 people had visited them and 200 were provided with the immune to fight the disease.

The cases of measles were found at several childhood centres and that they were working in collaboration with those centers so as to isolate those people who were at a risk of contracting the disease to avoid the further spread. The school children and staff were not contacted yet.

As per Dr. Hoskins, the children should take two doses of MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine at 15 months and four years. The first case of measles was found in a child who attended Oratia District School in west Auckland.

The common symptoms of contraction of measles consisted of a runny nose, cough, sore eyes and fever followed by a raised red rash that starts on the face and spreads across the body. The people who doubted that they had contracted the disease should call or visit doctors, “Immunization is the only way to avoid getting measles. The vaccination is funded for children, young people and unimmunized adults”, says Dr. Hoskins.
