Vaizey condemns BT and TalkTalk for challenging Digital Economy Act

Vaizey condemns BT and TalkTalk for challenging Digital Economy ActUK culture minister Ed Vaizey condemned Internet service providers BT and TalkTalk for their efforts to challenge the Digital Economy Act.

Last year, BT partnered with TalkTalk to launch a legal challenge against the Digital Economy Act, claiming that the act was illegal under European laws.

Taking a dig at BT, at the BPI AGM today, Mr. Vaizey said that it would be nice for BT if it put its energy into creating new music services for its customers rather than trying to overturn acts of the Parliament.

UK ISPs have been resisting copyright holders’ attempts that pressurize them to filter content.

But, Mr. Vaizey assured that the government was serious to stop websites from hosting pirated content or streaming live sporting events without consent.

Speaking on the topic, he said, “The Government has an important agenda of innovation, growth and technology. It wants to see a lot of start ups in this country, to ensure that the IP regime can both protect and allow innovators to innovate.”

Mr. Vaizey added that people have the right to earn money from the content they produce.
