Quick on the heels of Google's launch of new social-networking venture, Google+, Facebook added a video calling feature to its pages.
The new video calling feature has been brought to the world’s most popular online social network through a deal with the well-known Internet phone service Skype.
The addition of the new feature will allow Facebook users to connect with friends and relatives beyond simply posting messages with just a couple of button clicks and changing settings to ‘online’.
Users can start a video chat by clicking a button on their Facebook chat list or on a friend/relative’s profile page. Then, a box will appear on the screen of that friend’s computer to accept or decline the video call. Chat takes place inside a window which pops up within the browser.
Announcing the new service, Facebook’s founder & chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said, “Working with Skype underlines our approach to building stuff.”
He took a dig at Google’s entry into the social networking market. He said Facebook’s strategy was very different from other Internet companies who try to do everything themselves.
Facebook now has as many as 750 million users worldwide.
